I bought my laptop, an Acer, with vista on it…..?
I bought my laptop, an Acer, with vista on it. Now, I enjoyed my vista and was fine with it. But vista got annoying, it never worked with games and just got annoying. So I asked if there were some systems to download other then vista, so this computer “expert genious” came over to my house (he is a friend of my parents) and he came up with this great system called lineoux ( it is prounounced, lin x) and he decided to install that on my computer, but he forgot to tell me that once he installed that it would erase vista completely…now I reeely miss vista and love it more then ever and hate this lin x system. So, we went onto the Acer website and typed in my serial number and it says, “To buy the Acer recovery “”Image”" discs will cost 20 dollars including 10 dollars for shipping” so, what me and my parents are wondering is that would it be good to buy these discs, and will they completely restore my system to what it was when I bought the laptop and will it completely work?
Please only answer if you can completely answer this question…not suggest new programs to me..Thank you!

setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer?
I just bought a used laptop off ebay, it’s a Toshiba Tecra8000
Pentium II-300 MHz Processor
Memory: 256MB
Hard Drive: 20,000 MB
CD-Rom Drive
External Floppy drive
As soon as I turn it on it tells me to insert system disk.
I put in my windows xp, it goes to the setupt screen. A few mins later it gives the option to install, repair, or exit. When I click to install it says “setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer”

Best Methods to Backup Files

As much as every computer wants to deny the inevitable, your data is only as secure as your backups. Every hard drive is eventually going to fail (and malicious software frequently targets data files), and you will lose years’ worth of files, documents, programs, and all other information that you have kept and stored in your computer unless you have a good backup. Following are some of the best methods of data backup that you can use.

Internal Backup, One Disk

For a particularly large hard drive, the hard disk can be partitioned so that one partition may be used as a repository of backup data. For this type of backup, you can use automatic backup software, which will do daily backups of data you have specified or a full backup of your active partitions. You can also manually copy your files from your active drive partition to your backup drive partition as long as you do this regularly. This is one of the least advisable forms of backup out there, because the backup partition becomes as useless as the main partition if your hard drive ever crashes.

Internal Backup, Multiple Disks

You can also set up another hard drive for backup within your computer. This hard drive is a separate entity from your active hard drive, so it presents greater protection and data security in case your active hard drive is corrupted. In this case, you can use the methods listed above, or you can use a technology known as RAID 1 to create a mirror image of one hard drive on the other hard drive. The advantage of RAID 1 is that your data is completely safe if you suffer a hard drive crash, but this will not protect you from a virus or spyware infection, as the infection will be written to the backup drive right along with the good data.

On Site, External Backup

A more secure form of backup, external backups allow you to backup your files using external storage media like USB hard drives, CD-R(W)s, DVD-R(W)s, and high-capacity flash drives. Flash drives and external hard drives can be conveniently connected to your computer’s USB port when it is time to back up your files. For backing up with CDs and DVDs, you will need a CD or DVD writer, respectively. For any of these backup methods, you can still use backup tools that sometimes come with the backup data storage media.

Another method for onsite external backup is using network servers in the same office building or workspace dedicated to backing up data for the whole network. This backup method can be done automatically if the network administrator has set it up for individual clients. The network administrator can also do this manually, or each user can do his or her own data backup manually.

Off Site, External Backup

The key to this method is backing up data and storing the backup data storage device somewhere else. This type of backup method is done to protect not only from drive failures but also from catastrophes like fire, flood and earthquake.

Off site backup allows you to backup your files on a web-based server located far from your own physical location. You can also store backup data in discs and external drives which will be kept in a data storage vault that is physically located in a different building, city, state, or even country. There is no backup more secure than an external backup, but web servers can be expensive, so you may want to simply use your on site backup media and carry them home (or even store them in a safety deposit box). This still allows you to have a full backup without the hassle and cost of using a web server for your backups.

Why do these videos play fine on my GF’s slow computer,but not my faster computer.?
So I have been having all sorts of trouble playing these HD video files on my computer, such as 1080P videos, and even more in particular, these 720P h.264 encoded quicktime .mov files that a couple cameras I own use. All the research I’ve done on h.264 says its very cpu intensive.

I have an AMD Sempron 3400+ ( 2.0 ghz stock, but right now its overclocked to 2.4ghz), 1 gig of ram, and Asus Radeon A9200SE 128MB Video Card. VLC media player is the best I’ve found so far, but still when I play the files on my PC, my cpu usage goes straight to 100% and the videos play very choppy.

Well just for the heck of it, I tried playing one on my girlfriends laptop which is a few years old, and to my suprise, although her cpu usage went up to about 85%, the videos played just fine. I right clicked the “my computer” and checked her specs. While I don’t have the exact details, it said hers is an intel pentium 1.6ghz, with 1mb ram, and integrated radeon 9600 graphics.

So why does my 2.4 ghz computer hiccup so badly on these videos, and my gf’s 1.6ghz computer plays them fine? We’re both using the same OS, and same media player?

Only thing I can think of is if her radeon 9600 graphics are that much better than my 9200? In which case should I be able to just buy a used radeon 9600 card (see them on ebay for about ) and solve the problem? Or perhaps is there an even better card than the 9600 that can be found for about or less, and is agp?
OOps, I made a typo. her computer has 1gb of ram.

Other than the processor 2.4ghz vs 1.6 ghz, and also the 9200 vs 9600 video card, everything else is the same. Identical media player, identical antivirus and other idle programs (both have very minimum idling programs), same versions of windows, same amount of ram.

HELP!!! MY COMPUTER IS SCREWED UP!!!?
Hi guys, I download a file called CA.rar then I started to type something and a message pop up saying something like this: “Ca: get away from my computer!” I ignore this and start pressing and this message just keep poping up. After a few time it said “Oh on! You been warned!” And my computer just shut down. After turning it on again, the first thing I notice was that I was missing my internet explorer, so I used my firefox but it said something like this. Access on this computer has been canceled, please contact your software programmer. ( Sorry its in Chinese, i did the best to translate it ) So now I’m unable to do anything on my laptop. By the way, I’m using MacBook. The version I’m using is the one at the beginning when you turn on the computer, you press alt/option to change to window xp. Also note that my mac side is working but window xp is screw up.
